What is Yoga...

The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit 'yug', which means union.

Yoga in an ancient practice that enhances personal growth and well-being by promoting the Unification of Mind, Body and Spirit.

Yoga originated in India, over 5,000 years ago, and has become increasingly popular in western countries over the last century...

'Warrior I Posture' (Virabhadrasana I)

The practice of Yoga includes:

  • physical postures - Asanas
  • breathing exercises - Pranayama
  • positive thinking - Vedanta
  • meditation - Dhyana

Yoga is not a religion, but it can complement spiritual paths...

Although Yoga is connected to the Hindu tradition and draws on many Hindu beliefs (such as: karma - action; dharma - whatever one ought-to-do; Atman - the True Self; and reincarnation), the physical and mental benefits of Yoga are independent of religion, race and gender.

Benefits of Yoga...

Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois (Guruji)

"If we practice the science of Yoga...
we will then attain physical, mental,
and spiritual happiness  ...and our
minds will flood towards the Self"

-- Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois (Guruji)

The physical aspect of Yoga combines postures and focused breathing to help balance body and mind.  Yoga practice places emphasis on alignment to achieve maximum benefit from the postures, including:

  • improved physical fitness
  • general well-being
  • stress control
  • greater self-understanding
  • increased mental clarity

Yoga versus Traditional Exercises...

The physical aspects of Yoga promote increased strength by toning muscles and improving posture.  There is, however, a fundamental difference between Yoga and traditional forms of exercise:

'Upward Facing Dog Posture' (Urdhva Muka Svanasana)    When practicing Yoga, each individual
goes as far as their personal limit...

There is no set goal besides performing
up to your own abilities and limitations!

There's a Yoga level for everyone, regardless of age or physical condition!

About the Instructor...

George
George Fkiaras

George first became serious about Yoga while exposed to a general form of 'Hatha Yoga' classes, in Farmingdale, under the guidance of instructor Jennifer Logosso.  By the late 90's George had become a committed Yoga follower, devotedly practicing on a daily basis.  During a trip to Vermont in '99, he was introduced to Ashtanga Yoga (a more vigorous form of Hatha Yoga) -- it has since become the primary focus of his practice.

George practices Ashtanga Yoga under the guidance and inspiration of:
