Who May Join this Elite Organization? 

The requirements to become a member of the Veterans of Foreign War of the United States are the following:

  1. Be a United States Citizen with an Honorable Discharge;

  2. Have served overseas during time of conflict;

  3. Have been awarded a Campaign Medal
    - or -

  4. Have served in Korea for 30 consecutive days or
    60 non-consecutive days after June 30th, 1949.

VFW Community Programs
 

Youth Activities: The VFW plans, organizes and conducts youth activities such as:

 

  • The "Voice Of  Democracy" essay contest for high school students where first place can mean more than a $25,000. scholarship; and

  • The "Patriots Pen" essay contests for 7th and 8th graders where first place can mean more than $10,000 in scholarships.

  • VFW Members also teach  Americanism in schools, the Pledge of Allegiance, courtesy to our flag and actual events in history.

 
Community Activities:

The VFW gives you the opportunity to serve your community and feel good about yourself. Take part in patriotic functions Memorial day, Veterans day, loyalty day, band concerts, parades, poppy distribution, visits to  veterans hospitals.

Raise funds to help the needy, comfort those on active duty, distribute “poppy’s” made by disabled veterans  -- all donations go directly to assisting the needy vets.

Member Programs and Benefits

Legislative Services -  The VFW continues to rank as one of the most influential lobbies on Capital Hill.  We help protect members benefits.

Service Officer Programs - VFW  Post service officer gives assistance to members in helping to secure your benefits by guidance with proper forms and their destination  thereby  protecting your veterans rights also helps locate the location of your service record and medical record.  All other benefits due you and your family.

Remembrances - VFW Post services on Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Loyalty Day and Rituals at member’s wakes and graves side.  Post members visits to veterans hospital to entertain the patients by conducting “a day at the races” and bingo.  We buy commissary books and distribute them free as prizes. We also serve coffee, cake, cookies, tea, and ice cream.

Subscriptions - as a Post member you would receive the National VFW magazine, the Dept. of  NY “Overseas” newspaper and the Post 516 “Award  Wining Newsletter”.

Other benefits are:

Friendship and socials -  Meet new friends at Post meetings, events and socials such as dinner/ dances, card games, and open bar before and after the meetings.

Opportunities - As a VFW Post member you can join any committee that interests you, put your talents to work, help us help those less fortunate than we are, including distribution of  “UP-Link” cards which we donate to active servicemen and women so they can call home during the holidays. If you desire to you can join the “Color Guard”, (we supply the uniform), or become an office of the Post.  All you need to qualify for those positions is a willingness and desire to work for the benefit of the VFW.

Ladies Auxiliary

Membership to the Ladies Auxiliary VFW is open
to wives, widows, mothers, daughters, sisters and
granddaughters of persons who were/are eligible
for membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Ladies Auxiliary make lap robes and carry bags for the hospital veterans, they also assist the Post in distributing poppy’s. They meet once a month on the 3rd Thursday of every month at the Post 516 Hall. Membership is now open.
